Is there a way a civilian can get hold of a military MRE?

I've been told I'm stupid for this, but I'm curious to try one. I was hoping to see if I could get hold of an actual military MRE that is still within it's shelf life. I know that the sale of them is prohibited. I was hoping that I could get hold of a few legitimately. I've seen them advertised at army surplus stores, but the prices are out of this world, and in most cases they're too old to be any good. I thought about sending a message to the Department of Defense, but have no idea who to contact.
