Can surplus military / tactical rappelling harnesses used for rock climbing?

I've been looking to buy my own equipment and really get into the sport and I've always relied on military hardware so I was wondering. Make rock climbing gyms accept or allow more carry and use this gear or not?

No need to use military surplus equipment. You can get a good cheap UIAA approved harness for $ 40 or less. The gym does not even let you use something that is not approved by the UIAA, and you would not want anyway. Military surplus equipment is not all that reliable, and much of it was never even necessarily a model used by the military, but sold only to civilians.
